topdressing
Lawn's nutrient layer
Topdressing is material spread over a surface to improve it—fertilizer, compost, or sand applied to lawns, gardens, or sports turf without working it into the soil.
The practice itself is also called topdressing: The greens need a light topdressing before the tournament.
The verb is topdress.
