tollbars
Highway payment gates
Tollbars are barriers placed across roads to stop travelers until they pay a toll.
Historically common at turnpikes and bridge crossings, tollbars would be raised or swung aside after payment: The tollbar lifted and the coach proceeded.
Modern toll collection has largely replaced physical bars with electronic systems, though the term persists in place names.
