Short-distance phone connections
Local calls are telephone calls made within a limited geographic area, typically the same city or exchange, as opposed to long-distance calls.
Before cellular phones and flat-rate plans, phone service distinguished between local and long-distance, with local calls either free or cheap: Local calls are included in your basic service.
The distinction has largely faded as most plans now include unlimited domestic calling.
