tide flats

Low-water coastal plains

Tide flats are coastal areas of mud or sand that are submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide.

Also called tidal flats or mudflats.

These zones support distinctive ecosystems—clams, crabs, shorebirds feeding on invertebrates: We dug for razor clams on the tide flats at dawn.
