the farm

Where crops grow

A euphemism for death or dying, almost always appearing in the phrase bought the farm.

The expression originated in mid-20th century American military slang, possibly from the idea that a pilot's death benefits would pay off the family mortgage.

He bought the farm in Vietnam.

The phrase is informal and somewhat callous, often used to avoid saying someone died directly.
