the Badlands
South Dakota's moonscape
The Badlands are a region of eroded terrain in the western United States, particularly South Dakota, characterized by steep gullies, sparse vegetation, and dramatic rock formations.
The name comes from early travelers who found the landscape difficult to cross.
Badlands (lowercase, often badlands) also describes any similarly rugged, barren terrain shaped by erosion: The desert badlands stretched for miles.
