tenter

Fabric drying frame

A tenter is a frame for stretching cloth to prevent shrinkage while drying.

The cloth is held taut by hooks along the frame's edges—tenterhooks.

To be on tenterhooks is to be in anxious suspense, stretched tight with anticipation: We were on tenterhooks waiting for the test results.
