tent meetings
Outdoor evangelical assemblies
Tent meetings are religious revival gatherings held under large canvas tents, associated especially with evangelical Protestant traditions in America.
Traveling preachers would erect tents in rural areas or small towns for multiday services featuring impassioned sermons, hymn singing, and altar calls.
The format peaked in the 19th and early 20th centuries but continues in some communities: My grandmother got saved at a tent meeting when she was fifteen.
