technosignatures

Signs of extraterrestrial technology

Technosignatures are detectable signs of technology that might indicate the presence of intelligent life beyond Earth.

The term is used in astrobiology and SETI research for artificial signals or structures—radio transmissions, atmospheric pollutants, megastructures—that couldn't arise naturally: Scientists scanned for technosignatures in data from distant star systems.

The concept extends biosignatures, which indicate life generally, to focus specifically on technological civilization.
