synonymize

Replace with equivalents

To synonymize is to provide synonyms for a word or to treat words as synonymous: The thesaurus synonymizes "happy" with "joyful" and "content".

In technical contexts, particularly taxonomy, it means to merge two names under one accepted term: The species was synonymized with an earlier-described genus.

The word is formal and relatively uncommon outside specialized writing.
