individuate

Make uniquely distinct

To individuate is to distinguish something as a separate, distinct entity from others of its kind.

The term appears in philosophy and psychology, where it describes how we recognize individual things within categories or how a person develops a distinct identity: The infant gradually individuates from the mother.

Carl Jung used individuation for the process of integrating conscious and unconscious elements into a unified self.
