survey courses
Broad academic introductions
Survey courses are introductory classes that cover a broad subject area rather than focusing narrowly on one aspect.
A survey course in American history might span from colonization to the present day, giving students a general overview before they take more specialized courses: The English department requires two survey courses before students can take upper-level seminars.
