surgical margins
Tumor removal edges
Surgical margins are the edges of tissue removed during surgery to excise a tumor or lesion.
Pathologists examine these borders to determine whether cancer cells extend to the edge.
The surgeon achieved clear margins, meaning no cancer was found at the boundary.
Positive or involved margins may require additional surgery.
Also called resection margins.
