supertyphoon

Extreme tropical cyclone

A supertyphoon is a tropical cyclone in the western Pacific that reaches maximum sustained winds of at least 150 mph (240 km/h)—equivalent to a Category 4 or 5 hurricane.

The term is used primarily by meteorological agencies tracking storms in the Pacific basin: Supertyphoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines in 2013.
