sustained winds
Persistent air currents
Sustained winds are wind speeds averaged over a continuous period, typically one to ten minutes, as opposed to brief gusts.
Meteorologists use sustained wind measurements to classify storms and issue warnings: The hurricane made landfall with sustained winds of 120 miles per hour.
The distinction matters because gusts may spike much higher than the sustained reading.
