summer kitchens
Warm-weather cooking outbuildings
A summer kitchen is a separate cooking space, usually a small outbuilding or detached room, used to keep heat and cooking odors out of the main house during warm months.
Common in rural America before air conditioning, they contained a stove, workspace, and sometimes canning equipment.
The term now also describes outdoor cooking areas: We added a summer kitchen to the patio with a grill and sink.
