substantivization
Word class shift
Substantivization is the process of turning a word that isn't a noun into one.
Adjectives undergo this most often: the poor, the elderly, the accused.
Verbs can also be substantivized: a good read, the big reveal.
The term belongs to linguistics and grammar instruction.
Also called nominalization.
