street races
Unsanctioned car competitions
Street races are illegal, unsanctioned automotive competitions held on public roads rather than designated tracks.
Participants typically race from a standstill or at high speed, often at night when traffic is light: The cops broke up street races on the industrial strip.
The activity carries significant legal penalties and safety risks.
Street racing culture has spawned films, video games, and car modification subcultures.
