stone keep
Medieval defensive structure
A stone keep is a fortified tower that served as the central stronghold of a medieval castle.
Built of stone rather than earlier timber construction, keeps were designed to be defensible refuges of last resort, typically housing the lord's quarters, storage, and a garrison.
The Tower of London's White Tower is a famous example.
The stone keep rose above the outer walls.
