stick season

Trees without leaves

Stick season is the brief period in late autumn, after the colorful leaves have fallen but before snow covers the ground, when the landscape appears gray and barren with only bare branches visible.

The term originated in New England and has spread through popular culture, notably via Noah Kahan's 2022 album of that name.

I always get a little melancholy during stick season.

It captures a mood of transition and stark beauty that precedes winter's arrival.
