step-grandmother

Grandparent by marriage

A step-grandmother is the wife of one's biological grandfather, or the mother of one's stepparent.

The relationship forms through remarriage rather than blood: My step-grandmother came into my life when Grandpa remarried after Grandma died.

Like other step-relations, the term describes family bonds created by marriage rather than descent.
