stearin

Solid animal fat

Stearin is the solid component of animal fat, distinguished from the liquid portion (olein).

It's a mixture of glycerides, primarily glyceryl tristearate, used in making candles, soap, and other products where a hard, stable fat is needed.

The term sometimes refers specifically to stearic acid or its esters.

Stearin candles burn cleaner than paraffin.
