state highway

Government-maintained road

A state highway is a road built and maintained by a state government, typically connecting cities and towns within the state.

State highways form the middle tier of the road system—below interstate highways, above county roads.

They're usually numbered and marked with distinctive signs: Take State Highway 9 north to the lake.
