stabile
Unmoving abstract art
A stabile is a freestanding abstract sculpture with stationary parts, as opposed to a mobile, which moves.
The term was coined to describe the static works of Alexander Calder, whose mobiles had established the expectation of movement: The museum's courtyard features a massive red stabile.
