square bales
Boxed dried grass
Square bales are rectangular bundles of hay or straw compressed and bound with twine or wire, typically weighing 40-75 pounds.
Despite the name, they're not actually square—the cross-section is roughly rectangular.
They're distinguished from the larger round bales that require machinery to move: We stacked square bales in the barn loft.
The smaller size makes them manageable for hand-loading but labor-intensive for large operations.
