split ticket

Bipartisan voting choice

A split ticket is a ballot on which a voter chooses candidates from different political parties for different offices, rather than voting for all candidates of a single party.

The practice reflects independent voting behavior and can produce divided government when, for example, a voter supports one party's presidential candidate but the other party's congressional candidate.

She voted a split ticket, choosing the Republican for governor but Democrats for the state legislature.

The opposite is a straight ticket.
