spit shine
Boot camp gleam
A spit shine is a high polish on leather, especially shoes or boots, achieved by applying polish with saliva and buffing vigorously.
The technique produces a mirror-like finish prized in military settings: His boots had a perfect spit shine.
As a verb, to spit-shine is to polish this way, or more broadly, to make something presentable: They spit-shined the proposal before the meeting.
