spicules

Minute skeletal needles

Spicules are small, needle-like structures.

In biology, they form the skeletal framework of sponges and appear in various marine invertebrates—tiny crystalline spikes of calcium carbonate or silite.

In astronomy, spicules are jets of gas shooting up from the sun's surface.

The word applies to any sharp, slender projection: bone spicules, ice spicules.
