speech reading

Visual listening method

Speech reading is understanding spoken language by watching a speaker's lip movements, facial expressions, and gestures rather than relying on hearing.

The term is preferred over lip reading in deaf and hard-of-hearing communities because it acknowledges that comprehension involves the whole face and body, not just the lips: She became skilled at speech reading after losing her hearing.
