special stages
Extra challenge sections
Special stages are bonus or challenge levels in video games that differ from the main gameplay, typically offering unique mechanics, collectibles, or rewards.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog series, special stages are where players collect Chaos Emeralds through distinct minigame-like challenges: I finally got all the emeralds by completing every special stage.
Rally racing also uses the term for timed competitive sections of a course.
