soul force
Nonviolent spiritual resistance
Soul force is the power of nonviolent resistance rooted in moral conviction and spiritual strength.
The term translates Mahatma Gandhi's concept of *satyagraha*—the idea that truth and love can overcome injustice without physical violence.
Martin Luther King Jr. adopted the phrase to describe the philosophy behind the American civil rights movement: We will match your capacity to inflict suffering with our capacity to endure suffering... We will meet your physical force with soul force.
