soleplate
Flat pressing surface
A soleplate is the flat bottom surface of an iron that contacts fabric during pressing.
The term extends to the bottom plate of other tools and equipment—the base of a power planer that rides along the wood, or the horizontal timber at the bottom of a wall frame that rests on the foundation.
