smoke screens
Obscuring military cover
Smoke screens are clouds of smoke released to conceal military movements or positions from the enemy.
Figuratively, a smoke screen is anything designed to obscure or distract from the real issue: The CEO's apology was just a smoke screen while they quietly settled lawsuits.
Also written as one word: smokescreen.
