slow match
Gradual burning rope
A slow match is a cord or rope treated to burn very slowly and steadily, used historically to ignite cannons, muskets, and explosives.
The fuse smolders rather than flames, giving the user time to step back before firing.
The artilleryman touched his slow match to the cannon's vent.
