sleeping policemen

Traffic calming bumps

Sleeping policemen is the British term for what Americans call speed bumps—raised ridges across a road that force drivers to slow down.

The name captures the idea of an obstacle that enforces traffic rules without human intervention: The sleeping policemen on our street rattle every car that passes.

Also called speed humps or road humps.
