skid plates
Vehicle underbody protection
Skid plates are protective metal panels mounted to the underside of a vehicle to shield vulnerable components from rocks, debris, and rough terrain.
Standard equipment on off-road vehicles and trucks, they guard the engine, transmission, fuel tank, or transfer case: The skid plate took a beating on those boulders, but the oil pan survived.
Also called skid guards or bash plates.
