shut one's mouth

Cease all speech

To shut one's mouth is to stop talking or remain silent.

The phrase often appears as a command—Shut your mouth! —demanding someone stop speaking, usually because what they're saying is unwelcome or inappropriate.

It can also mean to keep quiet about something: He knew to shut his mouth about the deal.

More emphatic than simply asking someone to be quiet.
