show-through

Paper transparency problem

Show-through is the visibility of printing or images from one side of a page through to the other, caused by thin or translucent paper.

It's a concern in publishing and printing where text or graphics bleed through and interfere with readability: The cheap paper had terrible show-through.

The term also applies to any situation where an underlying layer becomes undesirably visible through a covering—paint that doesn't fully hide the color beneath, or a slip showing through a dress.
