shmatte
Worn-out old cloth
Shmatte, from Yiddish, is a rag or a piece of cloth, often old or worn.
By extension, it refers disparagingly to a cheap or shabby garment: I can't believe she paid two hundred dollars for that shmatte.
The word carries affectionate dismissiveness when someone downplays their own clothing: This old shmatte? I've had it for years.
Also spelled schmatte.
