shacktown

Makeshift dwelling area

A shacktown is a settlement of crudely built dwellings, typically occupied by people in poverty.

The word evokes images of makeshift shelters on the margins of cities or in rural areas: The shacktown grew up along the railroad tracks.

During the Great Depression, such settlements were also called Hoovervilles.
