set dance

A set dance is a traditional Irish social dance performed by groups, typically four couples arranged in a square formation.

Unlike céilí dancing, set dances derive from French quadrilles adapted to Irish music and steps.

Each dance consists of specific figures performed in sequence: We learned the Clare Lancers set at the workshop.

The term also refers to a solo competition piece in Irish step dancing, performed to a specific tune with prescribed steps.
