sepia ink
Squid-derived dye
Sepia ink is a brown pigment originally derived from the ink sac of cuttlefish.
It was widely used for writing and drawing from ancient times through the 19th century, valued for its warm, reddish-brown tone.
The color now evokes age and nostalgia—old photographs with their characteristic brownish tint are called sepia-toned whether or not actual sepia was involved: The sepia ink had faded but remained legible.
