self-narration

Telling your story

Self-narration is the internal or spoken commentary people maintain about their own lives and actions—the ongoing story we tell ourselves about who we are and what we're doing.

In psychology, it describes how identity forms through narrative: Her self-narration cast every setback as a learning experience.

The term also applies to characters in fiction who describe their own thoughts and actions to the reader.
