schizocoely
Mesoderm splits open
Schizocoely is the formation of a body cavity by splitting of the mesoderm, the middle layer of embryonic tissue.
This developmental process occurs in arthropods, mollusks, and annelids, distinguishing them from vertebrates and echinoderms, whose body cavities form differently.
The resulting cavity is called a schizocoel.
