sandtrap
Fairway's gritty obstacle
A sandtrap is a hazard on a golf course—a depression filled with sand, strategically placed near greens or fairways to penalize errant shots.
Also called a bunker.
The term extends figuratively to any situation that's easy to fall into but difficult to escape: The project became a sandtrap for our budget.
