samisen

Plucked Asian instrument

A samisen is a three-stringed Japanese instrument with a long neck and a small rectangular body, played by plucking with a large plectrum.

It accompanies traditional theater, folk songs, and geisha performances.

The spelling shamisen is equally common: She studied shamisen for years before her first public performance.
