sabre-toothed tiger
Ice Age cat
A sabre-toothed tiger is an extinct cat-like predator with elongated, blade-like upper canine teeth, known from fossils dating to the Pleistocene epoch.
Despite the name, these animals were not closely related to modern tigers.
The term often refers specifically to *Smilodon*, which roamed the Americas until roughly 10,000 years ago.
Also spelled saber-toothed tiger.
