sabering
Sword-popping champagne corks
Sabering is opening a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine by sliding a saber along the neck, striking the lip to shear off the top cleanly with the cork still in it.
The dramatic technique originated with Napoleonic cavalry officers.
The term extends to using any sturdy blade or even a heavy spoon: We sabered the champagne at midnight.
