ruthenium

Rare catalyst element

Ruthenium is a rare, hard, silvery-white metallic element belonging to the platinum group of metals.

It has the atomic number 44 and is used primarily in electrical contacts, as a catalyst in chemical processes, and as a hardening agent in platinum and palladium alloys.

The element was named after Ruthenia, the Latin name for Russia, where it was first isolated from platinum ore in 1844.
