rovings

Long meandering journeys

Rovings are loose strands or rolls of fiber—wool, cotton, or synthetic—prepared for spinning into yarn.

The fibers have been carded and drawn out but not yet twisted.

In a different sense, rovings are wanderings or travels without fixed destination: His rovings took him across three continents.

This sense comes from the verb rove, to wander.
